National Signing Day

Alex

Tomorrow is the NCAA National Signing Day… For the die hard College Football fans this is like the NFL Draft. National Signing Day is a very exciting time of year. It’s a time where Fans can do their own scouting for the next Heisman Trophy candidate. It’s also a time that can make or break a coach’s upcoming season. Every team has its holes, there is do doubt about that. This is a time where Coaches can go out and fill those voids with talented, intelligent young adults. This day also has a big effect on the pre-season football rankings, which are pretty much a shot in the dark anyways. If a school gets a big, talented recruiting class, that can boost them a spot or two. According to ESPN.com, the 2010 Top 10 Best Recruiting Classes are:

  1. Florida Gators
  2. Texas Longhorns
  3. Alabama Crimson Tide
  4. Georgia Bulldogs
  5. Auburn Tigers
  6. Oklahoma Sooners
  7. Penn State Nittany Lions
  8. LSU Tigers
  9. Florida State Seminoles
  10. USC Trojans

Coming from a HUGE NCAA Football Fan, I can’t wait to see who will end up at my favorite school. GO BLUE!

Firing Period

Alex

The NCAA Football offseason has been full of action. Coaches being fired, stepping down and taking other jobs. All of the action that has happened in the past week includes the Lane Kiffin saga. Lane Kiffin steps down as Head Coach at Tennessee to take the Head Coaching job at Southern Cal. All this is happening less than a month away from National Signing day. This creates a HUGE mess for incoming student athletes. Athletes who commit to schools for a certain coach are now stuck in a situation they do not want to be in, utlimately making their transistion to the collegiate life a bit harder. I propose that the NCAA should have a Firing Peroid… or at least a cut off date to where a school should let a coach go. This would prevent huge debacles with recruiting sanctions and will help students ultimately choose the right situation for themselves as STUDENT atheletes.

The Truth

Jake

Is it just me, or does Mark McGwire seem a whole lot more likeable now that he has come clean about his steroid use?

I’m not saying that everything should now be excused, but it takes a certain level of humility to publicly admit your wrongdoings, and that, to me, makes him seem more human and likeable than he seemed while he was hiding from the public for the last five years.

Maybe I’m just a sucker for the truth.

Unfair Fairwell

Alex

How can one not feel bad for Texas Longhorn quarterback Colt McCoy? The Texas Superstar sat out all but 2 minutes and 7 seconds in Thursday nights BCS National Championship Game. Colt McCoy is the all time leader in wins in all of Major College Football! It seemed like fate that McCoy got his chance to win a National Championship in the same Rose Bowl where Vince Young and the Longhorns won their last BCS title 5 years ago. But as fate has it, he would get hurt running the option against Alabama’s vaunted defense. I am not saying that if he didn’t get hurt, the Longhorns would have emerged victorious. I am just saying that I feel extremely bad for this young man who had waited four years for his opportunity only to watch the game from the sidelines. Mark Schlabach from ESPN wrote a great article about the Texas quarterbacks night.

Colt McCoy will rise again with the NFL. I believe some team will give him an opporunity and he will have even more motivation to continue his success at the next level.

If you could meet a viral video kid, who would it be?

Jennifer

Being in technology, I’m constantly being subjected to viral videos. Some good, some bad, but for the most part vastly entertaining. Which brings up the question: If you could meet a viral video kid, who would it be?

I have a few, but here are my top 3:

3. The “blood” kid – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fVDGu82FeQwatch?v=-fVDGu82FeQ

I have no idea what his name is or why his kid brother has an “owiee” but everytime I watch this I die laughing.

2. Charlie and his British brother – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OBlgSz8sSM

Cute little kids with British accents get me everytime. “Char-leee…that really hurt and it’s still hurting…”

And the number one viral kid I’d like to meet… ::drumroll::

1. I like Turtles Kid-Jonathon – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMNry4PE93Y

Come on…you know you found a new appreciation for “tuttles” after this one.

Post your own because I want to laugh.

More Trade Talks

Alex

The big topic around Detroit sports this week is “Trading Calvin Johnson.”

After hearing many different angles, I have come to the conclusion that it would be absolutely ridiculous to trade him! Yes, the Lions are not very good, andI understand that you could possibly get 3 high draft picks for him. I am a Lion slappy to where I believe the new GM can scout quality NFL Players, so I’d love to see more draft picks.

But the fact of the matter is that Calvin Johnson is a physical freak of nature. He has the rare combination of size, speed, dedication, and ball skills. Coming out of the draft, where the Lions drafted him 2nd overall, Draft experts labeled him as a once in a lifetime talent. That to me is a player that you might want to hang on to. If the Lions continue to draft well (5 of their draft pics are playing on NFL rosters), there will be a bright future of the Lions where Calvin Johnson will be a perennial NFL All-Pro.

Why I shop online

Michael

Like most of us this holiday season you’ve probably been doing some online shopping, hoping to get a good deal, not pay too much, receive it on time, and avoid the mall at all costs. I started shopping online when it was still the wild-wild-west. You had to make sure the checkout was secure because not all of them were. Site search was abysmal and finding something you wanted to buy was a bit of a crap shoot.  But at least you didn’t have to go to the mall.

The last time I went to the mall I yelled at people. Those who know me realize how unusual that is. After waiting half an hour in line to pay for my purchase, the cashier told me that I couldn’t buy my items at his station – I had to go to another department. I reasoned, I pleaded, and then I yelled. It didn’t help. I went to the other department, waited another 15 minutes and finally made my purchase. I’ve never gone back to that store again. I’ve never shopped at that chain again. I haven’t been back to the mall since. But that store is still in business. Go figure.

I’m not saying every website provides a better experience than what I went through but online competition faces a challenge that brick and mortar generally doesn’t – the mighty mouse. Most of us show much less patience online than we’re willing to endure in a brick and mortar store because the next store is just a click away. Can’t find it here? Don’t like the price? Don’t feel secure? Click. That challenge keeps us in the business of e-commerce on our toes.

And here are some big advantages to online shopping in my book: You don’t have to wade through the crowds; you’re always first in line at the checkout; and the car stays in the garage. Plus, you don’t have to take things to the post office or shipping store.

I continue to be amazed by people who love to go to the mall. I’m sure they have their reasons. I’m all wrapped up every day with www.fathead.com so I’m going to have a particular online prejudice I suppose. Still, the selection, the speed, the generally hassle-free experience made me a convert to online years ago and I’m not planning on going back. Besides, if I feel a need for a little holiday music, my laptop can handle that too.

Last Stop for the Worst Sports Joke Train

Jake

Fifth Nominee for Worst Sports Joke Ever, courtesy of JokesJoke.com:

Q: Why does it take longer to run from second base to third base than it takes to run from first to second?

A: Because you have a short stop between second and third.

I’m sorry if this made you laugh so hard that you spilled your Cosmo.

This was the final nominee for the Worst Sports Joke Ever award.  And the winner is…

…every person that didn’t read any of these Worst Sports Joke posts.  (You realize what that makes you, right?)

The Greatest Fathead Alive

Angela

I consider myself quite the sports fan, especially for a girl, so you can imagine my excitement when I was offered an internship at one of the coolest companies for sports fanatics. Within my first 2 weeks of being here I got a chance to see some of the new products we were going to be rolling out. As I mentioned my love for sports, another love of mine is music. When the Fathead was unrolled and the ‘greatest rapper alive’ was looking me in the face, I just about let out one of those high pitched screams, much like a 12 year old Jo-Bros fan. I’ve been waiting and waiting, telling all my friends that something big was coming, and the day has finally come. Lil Wayne is officially a new arrival to the Fathead music line.

Can you guess what I asked Santa to bring me for Christmas?

Really Tigers?

Denny

Once in a while you see a player come up with a team and you think to yourself, “This guy is untouchable. He might just spend his whole career with one team.” I thought that about Curtis Granderson.

He was just one of those guys who the Tigers faithful immediately took to because of his tremendous work ethic and get this- he was actually a decent human being! GASP!!! Granderson was told he couldn’t play big league centerfield, couldn’t hit for power, couldn’t do this or that.

Well, he might not be the most gifted player ever. It’s well documented that left-handed pitching gives him fits and he probably was never going to be the clutch lead-off hitter everyone was hoping to get, but I wonder if there is a player in Major League Baseball who made more out of what God gave him. You just figured, how could the Tigers get rid of a guy who hustled every time out, could hit 30 HR’s a year, steal 20 bases, had one of the best gloves in the game and was a pillar in the community? No possible way, right? Well, I guess not.

Off goes Granderson to  NY so the Tigers can clear some cash off the books. In return, prospects! Hooray! Guys who may or may not end up being worth a bag of bats in the bigs and if they are, won’t Detroit just trade them away for more prospects because they will command a higher salary? Not a good cycle we are starting here!

It’s just disappointing to see one of the most unanimously popular athletes in Detroit in a LONG time and a player who seems to be such a genuinely good person being shipped out. The number of jerseys at Comerica Park with #28 on the back had to greatly outnumber all of the rest combined. Everyone loved what this guy brought to the table. Can you tell I’m disappointed to see him go? These are the guys you need to keep for the long haul. This guy is a class act who will be missed!  You have to wonder if his best baseball lies ahead of him.  It’ll sting every time I see a Granderson highlight and he’s wearing those famous pinstripes.
