Charles’ LeBronathon: Day 462

Charles

Day 462: Lost… so hungry.

John Lennon has been criticized for years for allegedly saying the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Well this weekend has proven that LeBron is officially more popular than America. Independence Day was officially canceled because both Obama and Congress were too concerned with the “ever changing landscape of American professional basketball as we know it” to drink, shoot fireworks, or eat tasty 4th of July snacks like ice cream sandwiches, watermelon, and red-white-and-blue cake. It “didn’t seem like an appropriate time to celebrate with the fate of the free world hanging in the balance” commented one White House correspondent. The few fireworks that actually did go off on the 4th were sent up by the Clippers, with the words “Pretty Pretty Please?????” written across the sky above the Staples Center. When Kobe saw this, he laughed and went back to counting his money.

Questions, Comments, Concerns, and Clown Jokes:

LeBron is ahead by a nose in the BronBron v BP Showdown. With 843 Thousand mega-gallons of oil pumping into the gulf daily, and the coast looking greasier than Pat Riley’s hair (or was it Pitino’s?), LeBron’s supposed Wednesday or Thursday announcement (appreciate the precision LeBron!) is looking like a winner. Of course this some-time-this-week-I-think-maybe will be drawn out longer than Favre’s next soap opera, and probably last until just before the 2011 playoffs, but the fact that we’re pretending there is an end in sight seems promising.

In baseball news, I had the pleasure of going to the Detroit Tigers v Baltimore Oreos game yesterday, being played on the surface of the sun. With 64 combined runs scored in the first inning, and neither starting pitcher making it to the second, the game succeeded  in forcing the game to regress to the quality of 1924. The again there was beer so I guess it wasn’t as bad as prohibition.

The World Cup is winding down with Netherlands v Uruguay today, and Germany v Spain tomorrow. The winner of tomorrow’s match gets the honor of being the team to set the record for most thoroughly dominating a World Cup final. Regardless of who wins today, either the Germans will steamroll them in the final with at least 12 goals (7 by Klose) or the Spanish will maintain 94% of the possession, but keep the game interesting with lapses in defense, and David Villa will put it away with another absurd goal for a 1-0 victory. And no, Torres will not redeem himself.

That’s all from me. See you next time, when we can continue lamenting our Nation’s descent from world leader to leader in readership of LeBron’s tweets.

Fathead – Made in the USA

Michael

American Flag - Army - Military

We added a new category to the vast collection of Fathead products the other day and we call it USA. We needed a way to group under a common banner products as diverse as US Military Insignia and Vehicles, the American Flag, President Obama and our two latest bits of Americana – Harley-Davidson and Made in Detroit. Then it occurred to me – Fathead doesn’t just have a category called USA – we are USA! What I mean is, Fathead is located in, designed in and manufactured right here in the good ‘ol US of A – in Michigan as a matter of fact. I bet most people don’t know that about us, but now you do. If you think that’s as cool as we do, give us a shout back.

Bracket Brain and Home Town Heart.

Michael

The Men’s Final Four are set and they’re headed to Detroit which is right in Fathead’s front yard. As the number one sports city in America, Detroit takes great pride in hosting these sorts of events: The MLB All Star game, the Super Bowl and now the Final Four in a matter of just a couple of years. The Pistons, Red Wings and Tigers have all contributed to civic pride in the past few years by bringing post-season games and championships to the city.

Now the Michigan State Spartans have the chance to shine in front of the home-town faithful. I’ll admit that I didn’t pick MSU to win it all this year when I filled in my bracket a couple of weeks ago but I did have them making it this far. After these last two games I’m starting to believe that joining President Obama in my selection of North Carolinato emerge as national champions may not have been the best call. In fact, I’d gladly give up a bracket win for the much more meaningful victory of Sparty at Ford Field.

This raises in my mind the reasons we pick the teams we do when we fill out our brackets. Logic would seem to dictate that the largely more knowledgeable tournament selection committee does the seeding to represent those in the best position to advance and we should all just pick the number one seeds for the final four. We also know that it rarely turns out that way though this year it turned out pretty close to the truth. We all want our teams to win and it’s just really hard to accept that they might not. I spent eight years teaching at the University of Oklahoma and I always want the Sooners to do well. When I picked UConnto beat OU in the regional finals I was going against what my emotions wanted me to do and listening to what my brain and the selection committee told me was most likely to happen. Did I feel good when UConn advanced and my bracket standing went up – not really. Should we just embrace the madness that is March and forget about the seeding?

For now, yes. May the home team win! Let the people of Detroit and Michigan celebrate again! I know I’d rather see the Spartans win than be right about picking some teams I don’t really care about.
