We have a lot of gamers on the Fathead technology team, including myself. There’s not a day that goes by you don’t hear someone talking about the achievement points they earned last night, or that awesome headshot they pulled off on some noob, or even what cool new lewt dropped in their favorite MMO. When I heard we were working with 2K Sports and their new Major League Baseball 2K10 I was pretty excited. We were told we’d be including unique codes in every copy of the game that could be redeemed for a free Fathead Jr. Pretty cool, eh? On top of that 2K Sports is offering $1 million dollars to the first person to pitch a perfect game. Every gamer knows that freebies are good, but multiple freebies and a chance to win a cool million? Golden.
We sent out the free Fathead Jr. codes awhile ago, setup the website to handle redemption and today the game dropped on store shelves. Then it happened… Holy cow do gamers have buying power! Hundreds of code redemptions, then thousands. Our web servers were working their collective tails off. A lot of us have been a part of the mad rush during a game launch before so we knew what to expect but there has still been a collective OMG every time we check the status of the promotion. It’s been one heck of a ride, but it’s been fun!
As the business day comes to a close we have some final little things to finish up, but then I’m headed home to pitch that perfect game. That million dollars is so mine…
